It may be too early to tell what the next administration will try to accomplish. I try to maintain a balance of optimism and concern. There is, understandably, a significant focus on economic issues, which I think we could all agree is important to our business and future. But along with this may come an environmental cost with severe consequences for public health, ecosystems, and the planet as a whole that I’d like to hope could be balanced out in a way that has a long term view.
We are all connected to the natural world, and a healthy planet is essential for our survival. By protecting the environment, we are protecting ourselves and future generations.
This could be an opportunity for people with a mind toward the future to speak out and take action on issues that are important to them.
Some key points that are possible with very few guardrails to stop them:
Weakening Environmental Regulations: Significantly weakened environmental regulations, particularly those related to climate change, air and water pollution, and endangered species protection.
Deregulation of Industries: Industries like oil, gas, and mining, which could lead to increased pollution and environmental damage.
Defunding Environmental Agencies: Dismantling of key environmental agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Promoting Fossil Fuel Development: Like you, we still put gas in our car. But let's look at ways to not destroy the environment. Expansion of fossil fuel development, including fracking and offshore drilling, which could contribute to environmental degradation. To be fair, I’m not a huge fan (no pun intended) of all the giant windmills that visually litter almost the entire thumb of Michigan.
Impacts:
National Parks and Wilderness Areas: Imagine fewer rangers protecting our beloved national parks and wilderness areas like Yellowstone and Yosemite. This could lead to increased pollution, illegal activities, and damage to delicate ecosystems, forever altering the pristine landscapes we cherish.
Mountain Ranges and Forests: Envision fewer regulations on logging and mining in the majestic Rocky Mountains and the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest. This could lead to deforestation, habitat loss for wildlife, and increased risk of devastating wildfires, forever scarring these iconic landscapes.
Lakes and Rivers: Consider the impact of weaker water quality standards on the pristine lakes of the Great Lakes, Adirondacks and the majestic rivers of the Pacific Northwest. This could affect the fish we catch and the water we drink, forever altering the natural beauty and ecological balance of these beloved waterways.
Health Risks: Increased pollution can lead to serious health problems like asthma, allergies, and heat-related illnesses, affecting people of all ages, especially the most vulnerable.
Economic Impacts: Environmental damage can harm industries like tourism, fishing, and agriculture, leading to job losses and economic decline in communities that rely on these sectors.
Remember those childhood summers spent hiking in the woods, swimming in clear lakes, or just gazing at the stars? Let's preserve these precious memories for future generations.
